THE HONEST ANSWER
What can an extension do that an Interface can't?
This is the question everyone has, so here it is plainly. Airtable Interfaces are configurations — you assemble pages from Airtable's building blocks. Extensions are code — a real React application running inside your base with the full Blocks SDK. That difference matters in specific, predictable places:
CAPABILITY
STANDARD INTERFACE
CUSTOM EXTENSION
Custom visualizations
Charts from Airtable's fixed set
Any visualization you can build in JavaScript — timelines, maps,
seating charts, dependency graphs
Bulk, multi-step operations
One record at a time, or basic
bulk edits
One click can validate, transform, and write hundreds of
records with your business rules enforced
External data at render time
Only what's synced into the
base
Call outside APIs live — pricing, availability, enrichment —
without duplicating data into fields
Custom input experiences
Airtable's form and field
editors
Purpose-built editors: drag-and-drop assignment boards,
guided wizards, keyboard-first data entry
Enforced process logic
Users can skip steps the layout
merely suggests
The UI itself enforces sequence, validation, and permissions in
code
Documents & exports
CSV, print views
Generate formatted PDFs, custom file formats, or push to other
systems on demand
The equally honest flip side: if your workflow fits Interface's building blocks,
you don't need an extension — an Interface is cheaper, faster to change, and
maintained by Airtable, not you. We tell clients that regularly. The extension
work begins where configuration ends.
SHIPPED WORK
Extensions we've put in production
We've shipped a wide variety of custom extensions since the Blocks SDK
launched. A few representative builds:

UNDER THE HOOD
A constraint we actually solved
Anyone can list features. Here's one specific technical wall we hit in a real build,
and how we got past it.
THE CONSTRAINT
A client desired a way to visualize and plan company capacity across a variety of teams using complex formulas with strict visual requirements that a standard interface could not handle. Natively, this would have required a large series of linked records, formula fields, junction tables, and requiring all data necessary live on a single table.
WHAT WE DID
We built a custom interface that not only met all of the clients visual needs, but also performed cross table calculations on the back end live so when data changed all calculations got reran live.
WHAT THE CLIENT GOT
The client received a responsive interface that is used in production and based exactly on how they calculate their current capacity.
